When Sennheiser launched the first Momentum True Wireless earbuds in 2018, it showed that it can hold its own in the fast growing TWS category as well as it had for decades with its wired models. Six years later, that remains equally, if not more true with the 4th gen Momentum True Wireless earbuds (not to be confused with the Momentum 4 Wireless over-ear headphone), which are consistently ranked alongside the Apple AirPods Pro 2, Sony WF-1000XM5 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds.
Now, these premium wireless earphones are discounted on Amazon by up to 23%, bringing their price down from $3000 to a more palatable $232. Do note that the discount varies based on the colour variant: The Black Graphite is the one at $232; the Black Copper one is currently priced at $240, while the White Silver is at $253.
The overwhelming opinion on these earbuds is that they are practically unbeatable when it comes to sound quality. Without resorting to too many abstract adjectives, it’s safe to say that the Momentum 4 perform an outstanding job of reproducing music. Their sound has been described as rich, detailed and dynamic, but using just enough DSP that fidelity is not compromised. If premium sound quality is your biggest priority, but you also want the convenience of Bluetooth, then these might be the earbuds for you.
They may not be the very best out there at noise cancellation – Bose is still reigning ANC king with its QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds – but they’re certainly good enough to be in the same league as the Apple AirPods Pro 2 and the Sony WF-1000XM5. They also excel at wearing comfort, which is arguably the most important factor to consider with wireless earphones.
They also get Bluetooth 5.4 with LE Audio and Auracast support coming soon via firmware update. They support AptX Lossless and up to 24-bit/96kHz audio resolution. As What HiFi highlighted here, Sennheiser has used special manufacturing and antenna-placement techniques to ensure that the Bluetooth connectivity is rock solid even in the busiest of locations, such as London’s Waterloo station at rush hour – a feat that even the flagships from Bose and Sony audibly struggled with.
The Momentum 4 also have a host of other features that one would expect at this price range, such as multipoint connectivity, wireless charging, a 7.5 hour battery life and advanced sound customisation through the app. Spatial audio is notably absent, but given Sennheiser's focus on sound quality, and that spatial audio is best suited for movies, TV and gaming anyway, that's not too surprising.
The Momentum 4 were launched earlier this year, so you can rest assured they won't be replaced with a newer version any time soon. Alternatives include, of course, the models mentioned above from Bose, Sony and Apple. Another notable mention would be Jabra’s Elite 10 2nd gen with the unique LE Audio equipped case, after whose launch, sadly, Jabra announced the discontinuation of their Elite series of consumer models.
