After previewing the X1"flying car" that can take off and land vertically in a regular parking spot, and the larger X2, XPeng's AEROHT division has now set a price and release date for its so-called modular flying car concept.

The flying car, together with the Land Aircraft Carrier vehicle it fits in, will cost up to $280,000 when the set is released in 2026.

XPeng will demonstrate the first public manned flight with the modular flying car in November, but will begin to build its factory as soon as this month, and will start taking preorders later this year.

It plans to have a pilot line up and running by next August, with first deliveries starting in late 2025. The Guangzhou factory is planned for a capacity of about 10,000 modular flying cars annually, as XPeng's goal is to become a leader in global eVTOL (Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing) vehicle manufacturing.

The modular flying car concept relies on the aforementioned Land Aircraft Carrier vehicle. It comes with extended-range battery that will also serve to recharge the flying module on the go, as well as 6x6 wheel drive with rear steering to get to faraway places.

The so-called flying car itself is basically a giant drone with vertical takeoff and landing abilities that is made to fit in the Land Aircraft Carrier mothership, whose angular design and steel finish resemble Tesla's Cybertruck electric pickup.

Unlike the X1 flying car that fits one person and is not covered, however, here XPeng offers an actual cockpit for two passengers to fly in relative comfort, like a small personal helicopter.

Mum's the word on the exact specs like battery capacity, or flying and driving distances, but the $280,000 price sounds enticing, provided that Asia's largest flying car maker can deliver it at that tag by 2026.

The world's biggest battery maker CATL is also testing eVTOLs and electric planes, and is developing 500 Wh/kg cells with that specific industry in mind, as airborne vehicles seem to be the next frontier in the neverending quest of local companies to dominate electrified transportation.
