Earlier this month, we reported that Tesla's Model Y had snagged the top spot as the world's best-selling vehicle, finally edging out the Toyota RAV4, but it looks like the electric crossover may have a hard time pulling that off again. According to Dataforce numbers (via Automotive News Europe), the Tesla Model Y has slipped from its top spot in sales charts all the way to 18th in the month of May 2024.

This stark, decline in sales represents a 48.9% drop — or 10,373 cars — in units sold. The news of the decline in Model Y sales comes shortly after Tesla dropped the price of the Model Y in early June. Now it seems like we finally know why Tesla is so desperate to move Model Y units, since the EV maker would have noted the drop in sales long before this report.

In spite of the Model Y sales slump, the electric crossover SUV is still Tesla's best-selling car in Europe for 2024, snagging ninth place in the year-to-date ranking, at 79,204 units sold — another decline of 23.9% (24,915 cars) compared to the same period in 2023. For the same YTD period, the Tesla Model 3 came in 44th place, with just 38,911 EVs sold between January and May 2024.

Tesla's closest competition in the European EV space seems to be the Volvo EX30, with 7,986 units sold in May 2024.
