Samsung to bring 6 years of OS updates to entry-level smartphone market with Galaxy A15 5G successor

Recently, leakers have turned their attention towards the Galaxy S25 series when it comes to unreleased Samsung smartphones, which is expected to consist of the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Plus and Galaxy S25 Ultra. However, none of these devices are anticipated to arrive until early 2025.

In the meantime, it appears that Samsung may expand its Galaxy A series with a new budget option. To recap, Android Headlines leaked a few promotional images relating to the Galaxy A16 5G, which will directly replace the existing Galaxy A15 5G (curr. $149.99 on Amazon). In the main, new leaks reiterate what was known previously about the Galaxy A16 5G, such as its reliance on MediaTek's Dimensity 6300 chipset and in some markets and the Exynos 1330 in others.

Additionally, the new handset will be the spitting image of its predecessor. With that being said,The Tech Outlookasserts that the Galaxy A16 5G will be slightly bigger than its predecessor at 164 x 77.9 x 7.9 g, which will facilitate the inclusion of a 0.2-inch larger display. This new panel will maintain a 1080p resolution, a 90 Hz refresh rate and 800 nits peak brightness, though.

Added to that, Samsung will advertise the Galaxy A16 5G as being IP54 certified against dust and water ingress; theGalaxy A15 5Ghas no IP rating. More importantly, Samsung will provide the former with 50% more major OS updates than the latter. Consequently, the Galaxy A16 5G will likely receive OS updates until Android 20 in 2030, which is also when Samsung will stop issuing new security patch updates. Currently, Samsung is expected to release the device globally later this month.
