All Raspberry Pi SBCs eligible for improved functionality thanks to new update

Earlier this week, we reported that approximately 100 lines of code could help improve performance on Raspberry Pi single-board-computers (SBCs) like the Raspberry Pi 5 (curr. $89.89 on Amazon). In short, the tweak introduces NUMA emulation, more details about which we have covered separately. On top of that, the Raspberry Pi Foundation itself has expanded use of Raspberry Pi Connect to more devices, usage of which it previously limited to the Raspberry Pi 4 series onwards.

For context, Raspberry Pi Connect allows one to connect to their Raspberry Pi remotely securely. Although this is possible using the Secure Shell Protocol (SSH), Raspberry Pi Connect does not require having an understanding of how to port forward between different networks. Additionally, the Pi Foundation has added remote shell functionality from a web browser while maintaining a secure connection, negating the need for using a desktop environment altogether.

Before now, the Pi Foundation required Raspberry Pi Connect to run on 64-bit versions of Raspberry Pi OS. However, this week's update opens Raspberry Pi Connect to 32-bit versions, including Raspberry Pi OS Lite. In other words, the feature can be used on any Raspberry Pi SBC, even the Raspberry Pi 1 that the Pi Foundation released in 2012. Please see the Foundation's Raspberry Pi Connect documentation for further details, such as installation instructions and troubleshooting procedures.
