No manufacturer has announced an AMD Strix Point gaming handheld yet, but with mini PCs featuring the new Zen 5 chips expected this October, we may see announcements about handhelds soon. The biggest upgrade that they would bring is the RDNA 3.5 iGPUs.

Previously, the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 with Radeon 890M went through a handheld simulation at 17W TDP, and the performance boost over the Radeon 780M was quite noticeable. Now, ETA Prime has put the Ryzen AI 9 365 with Radeon 880M through a similar test.

The first game tested was Horizon Zero Dawn at 1080p, medium settings, and FSR set to balanced mode. The Ryzen Z1 Extreme with Radeon 780M averaged at 52 FPS, while the Ryzen AI 9 365 had an average FPS of 60. OnCyberpunk 2077, at 1080p, low settings, and FSR set to performance mode, the Radeon 780M had an average of 55 FPS, while the Radeon 880M had 63 FPS.

ETA Prime notes that the performance gap is much wider at older games. For example, on Fallout 4, the Ryzen Z1 Extreme hovers around 55 FPS, while the AMD Ryzen AI 9 365 stays above 60 FPS all the time, even reaching 80 FPS in some instances. The game was benchmarked at 1080p with medium graphics settings.

Another game where the performance difference was very noticeable is Forza Horizon 5. At medium settings and 1080p resolution, the last-gen Radeon 780M inside the Ryzen Z1 Extreme stayed at around 60 FPS, while the Radeon 880M had an average of about 76 FPS.

The YouTuber has also tested some games at a higher TDP. At 25W, the Z1 Extreme averaged 38 FPS on Red Dead Redemption 2, while AI 9 365 had 42 FPS. This game was benchmarked at 1080p resolution with medium settings. Another game tested at this TDP is Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

That's the only game in which the Ryzen Z1 Extreme pulled ahead, with an average of 43 FPS. The AMD Ryzen AI 9 365 with Radeon 880M, on the other hand, had an average of 41 FPS. Overall, the new iGPUof the Zen 5 APU is about 13% faster, but it's mostly in the lower TDP ranges. The difference could've been less noticeable if both were tested at higher TDPs.

But again, getting better performance at lower TDP is a plus for battery life. Even so, it doesn't warrant an upgrade for those with a gaming handheld with the Radeon 780M (512 GB Legion Go curr. $599.99 on Best Buy).
