Onyx announces Boox Go 6 Android-powered eReader

Onyx has announced a new budget ePaper reader called the Boox Go 6. As is evident from the name, this is a 6-inch device with an E Ink Carta 1300 displaythat has a 1448 x 1072 resolution (300 ppi). The display is flush, and the thick bezels surrounding it should provide a place to rest your fingers when holding the device for reading.

The Boox Go 6 allows users to switch between light and dark modes while the adjustable front light ensures you can read in the dark. Owners can also choose between white cold light or a warm amber light which is easier on the eyes at nighttime.

Like several of Boox's eReaders, the Boox Go 6 is powered by Android, which means users can install Android apps on the device. The Boox Go 6 runs Android 12 out of the box and comes with Google Play pre-installed. It has an octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage that can be expanded via a microSD card slot. There's also free 10GB of Onyx cloud storage for new and existing users.

The Boox Go 6 supports up to 26 digital formats including PDF, EPUB, EPUB3, AZW3, MOBI, DOCX, PPT, and HTML. It also has support for MP3 and WAV audio formats. Onyx says it will add support for more formats in the future. It also promises the device will receive more than three years of software support.

The eReader has a 1,500mAh battery that should last for days depending on usage. It charges via a USB-C port which also has an OTG function and supports audio over USB-C. Since it lacks a speaker and an audio jack, this should come in handy if you want to listen to an audiobook or podcast. There's also Bluetooth 5.0, so you should be able to connect wireless headphones or speakers. The eReader comes with a cable in the box but buyers would have to provide their own power adapter.

At $149.99/£149.99/€169.99, the Boox Go seems expensive for an e-reader when compared to devices like the Kindle 2022 (curr. available discounted to $84.99 on Amazon), but remember that it is also practically an Android tablet since you can install apps from the Play Store. The device is available to order from the Boox online shop with a shipping date set for mid-September. All orders will come with a free magnetic case.
