First NIO Onvo L60 reviews demo why Tesla Model Y Juniper may be obsolete even before release

With its 900V architecture, record0.229 drag coefficient, swappable battery, more energy-efficient drivetrain, and a much lower starting price, the new Onvo L60 crossover is seemingly beating the Model Y Juniper even before Tesla's grand unveiling.

It is larger than the Model Y, but sits slightly lower and has a better coefficient of drag than the current Y. The design and NIO’s lightweight 900V motors and powertrain add to the impressive 12.7 kWh/100km energy efficiency of the AWD version that handily beats the dual-motor Model Y, too.

The up to 85 kWh LFP battery pack is very thin and serves as the floor of the Onvo L60, making for incredibly roomy back seating despite the sloping, aerodynamic rear. The batteries charge in 20–25 minutes, but future L60 owners can use any current NIO battery swap stationto get a freshly changed one in a few minutes, too.

The Onvo L60 interior includes heated and vented massage front seats, a large 17.2-inch main display and a smaller screen for the rear passengers, a 50W wireless charging pad, and a 1000W sound system with 18 speakers. The driver-assist system works on the highway and in the cities, scouring the L60's surroundings with 13 cameras and even a 4D mmWave radar while autoparking.

The AWD version accelerates in 4.6 seconds, and the Onvo L60 offers all that jazz while undercutting the Model Y price by more than $4,000. If Tesla releases the Juniper at the same price as its predecessor, it will have a tough time competing against formidable challengers like the new L60.

NIO announced its new Onvo brand on May 15, and its first representative will be launched on September 19 with a big event detailing the L60's specs, pricing, and battery-as-a-service discounts that can bring its price down to the equivalent of $22,500 even.
