After an excruciating wait for all camping trip lovers with a Model Y, Tesla finally released a Model Y-specific air mattress camping bed.
The Model Y air mattress is priced at $225 and perfectly fits the contours of the Model Y interior all the way up to the front seats.
It wraps around the wheel wells and comes with a storage bag, a 12V air pump, and a few repair patches. The first Model Y inflatable bed orders have started to arrive and people are reporting their initial impressions.
The Model Y air mattress comes out to74.4 X 50.4 X 3.12 inches (1.91m X 1.3m X 0.8m) in dimensions when fully inflated, and Tesla promises that"its 3-inch, high-density foam filling creates a soft landing pad, and its waterproof polyester exterior is durable and smooth to the touch."
On the issue of comfort, however, one of the first Model Y air mattress owners is reporting that it is rather firm when fully inflated, despite Tesla's 3-inch foam filling assurances.
Still, this is not unlike other air mattress as they tend to stay rather firm when fully inflated, and is preferable to the water bed feeling that many inflatable mattresses deliver when tossing and turning on them.
When it comes to the air pump output when plugged into the 12V outlet, it is apparently powerful enough to quickly inflate the Model Y air mattress in less than a minute.
That's important, as the main complaints about the popular and cheaper Uncle Elk Model Y air mattress alternative are about the pump's power and reliability. It does come with cup and phone holders, as well as pillows that the Model Y air mattress that is twice the price doesn't have.
What's equally important, especially when in a hurry, is that the Model Y inflatable bed "deflates very quickly" with the provided 12V pump, too, again in less than one minute.
The air bed installation pictures show a lighter color that is a bit different from the black hue rendered on the Tesla Store website and, needless to say, the surface does not stay as smooth after use as it is in the marketing pictures.
One of the other welcome features that Tesla thought about when it designed the Model Y air mattress, beside the good contouring job, is that its storage bag fits in the frunk with some room to spare, so it doesn't need to take any space at the back of the vehicle.
