Magic V Flip: Honor challenges Galaxy Z Flip6 and Razr 50 Ultra with 3,000 nit display and outdated Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset

Honor has unveiled its first clamshell foldable smartphone, following yesterday's global launches of the Honor 200, Honor 200 Pro and MagicBook Pro 16. Incidentally, the Magic V Flip is Honor's first foldable smartphone release since the Magic V2, which arrived almost a year ago sporting a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. Logically, one would expect Honor to equip the Magic V Flip with the same chipset or newer, like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Surprisingly, the company has opted for the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 instead, which powers the almost two-year-old Galaxy Z Flip4 (curr. $278 refurbished on Amazon). Nonetheless, the Magic V Flip is still rather expensive at CNY 4,999 (~$689) with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. Alternatively, Honor offers the device with 512 GB or 1 TB of storage for CNY 5,499 (~$758) and CNY 5,999 (~$827) respectively, both with 12 GB of RAM.

Moreover, all Magic V Flip variants feature a 4-inch LTPO OLED cover display that supports 0.1-120 Hz variable refresh rates, as well as a 6.8-inch foldable AMOLED display that also peaks at 120 Hz with an LTPO backplane. For reference, the larger display outputs natively at 2,520 x 1,080 pixels and delivers up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness. On top of that, Honor equips the handset with a 4,800 mAh battery that supports 66 W wired charging and a 50 MP primary camera that is joined by 50 MP selfie and 12 MP ultra-wide-angle cameras. Although Honor has not mentioned a global release yet, there is every chance that the Magic V Flip will be available outside China at some stage.
