iPhone 16 and 16 Pro leak reveals major camera upgrades, capacitive \'Capture\' button, and 3K 120fps recording with Dolby Vision

As the buzz surrounding Apple's upcoming iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro launch intensifies, the rumor mill has been busy churning out details at a steady pace. With every rumor that hits the interwebs, the picture of what Apple's next-generation flagship smartphones will hold becomes clearer. Ranging from a widely rumored redesign to the iPhone 16 lineup and impressive camera upgrades to the iPhone 16 Pro lineup to SoC upgrades packing more AI chops than ever before across the board.

A recent report by the well-known publication AppleInsider has further added fuel to the fire by revealing a host of camera system upgrades to both the iPhone 16 and the 16 Pro. As expected, many of the details shared have already been rumored before, lending further credibility to the actual possibility of the expected upgrades leading to fruition.

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus

For the non-pro variants, we can expect the familiar dual-camera setup at the back, featuring a 48 MP primary lens with 1x and 2x optical zoom and an aperture of f/1.6, complemented by a secondary ultra-wide camera, the latter of which will feature a faster f/2.2 aperture. Notably, AppleInsider claims that this year's models will likely introduce macro-photography to the non-Pro lineup for the first time.

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro Max

The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are expected to receive more substantial improvements in the photography department. The Pro lineup will retain the familiar triple-camera arrangement on the back, and the primary camera will likely remain untouched from the iPhone 15 Pro, rocking a 48 MP sensor with a f/1.78 aperture.

That being said, a significant upgrade is expected with the introduction of a 5x telephoto lens, replacing the 3x telephoto lens on the iPhone 15 Pro, though it will retain the 12 MP sensor with an f/2.8 aperture. Moreover, the ultra-wide lens could receive a considerable boost to 48 MP, with the potential to support 48 MP ProRaw photos.

Capture Button and more

Perhaps one of the biggest changes to the exterior of both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro lineup will be the inclusion of a new 'Capture button'. This new capacitive button will likely grace the entire iPhone 16 lineup, and won't just be limited to the Pro variants as previous reports have suggested.

This button will reportedly feature gesture controls, likely for zoom adjustments or filter selection along with pressure sensitivity, which would allow for exposure and focus lock with a half-press prior to a full-click, akin to Apple's 3D-touch functionality that was phased out with the iPhone 11 series. Additionally, this button will also allow users to open the camera app of their choice when clicked, even if it is a third-party one.

AppleInsider's sources have also suggested that Apple may introduce a new image format named JPEG-XL for the iPhone 16 series, which might improve photo quality and compression. Both the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Pro are also expected to support 3K video recording at 120fps with Dolby Vision.

The iPhone 16 series is expected to be unveiled by Apple sometime next month. For a detailed analysis of all the rumors and leaks that we have gathered so far, check out our Leak Lounge roundup for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro.
