Shadows: Awakening was developed by Games Farm and published by Kalypso Media in August 2018. It is an isometric action RPG in which players take on the role of a Devourer - a demon that can devour the souls of deceased heroes. The game begins when the Order of Penta Nera, a group of powerful mages, is murdered. However, their souls are not destroyed, but absorbed by the Devourer.

As a Devourer, players can switch between different souls, with each of the souls, also known as "Puppets", representing a separate hand with individual abilities. This adds a tactical layer to the dynamic combat system. A key component of the game is the ability to switch between the real world and the shadow world. The Devourer can switch between these worlds to solve puzzles and discover hidden dangers.

Players explore the Heretic Kingdoms, solve puzzles by switching between the real world and the shadow world and fight demons, undead or magical creatures. The aim is to uncover the dark secrets behind the Order of Penta Nera and save the world from demonic forces. According to GOG, the game takes around 38 hours to complete.

On Steam where Shadows: Awakening has a largely positive rating average (75 percent positive ratings from around 1,500 reviews), the game normally costs around $30. At GOG gamers still have the chance to get the game for free until June 24 at 9 am. EDT On Metacritic shadows: Awakening has a Metascore of 72 and a User Score of 6.2. In addition to technical faults, players criticize the sometimes sluggish narrative and excessively long running paths.
