Gamescom 2024 | Asus and MSI reveal innovative quick-release mechanisms for GPUs and M.2 SSDs

At Gamescom 2024, Asus and MSI were really turning heads with some cool quick-release mechanisms for GPUs and M.2 SSDs. These new features aim to make life easier for folks building PCs, especially when dealing with those hefty components.

Asus rolled out its latest ROG X870E Hero motherboard, showing off a slick quick-release setup for the main M.2 slot and the graphics card. The GPU pops right out when you pull from the front, so you don’t even have to mess around with anything. This takes things up a notch from Asus’s earlier Q-release design found in their Z690 models back in 2021, which required a manual switch.

MSI wasn’t to be outdone, though. They revealed their upcoming Z890 MPG Edge motherboard, decked out with a neat PCIe release feature called 'EZ PCIe Release.' This puts the release switch right above the graphics card, next to the DIMM slot, making it super easy to take it out when you need to. Their demo also highlighted how simple it is to insert and remove M.2 SSDs, which is a big plus for users.

These upgrades are super timely, especially as graphics cards keep getting bigger, making it tricky to swap them out in tight spaces. With these quick-release designs, swapping components becomes a breeze and helps avoid any accidental damage during upgrades.

It'll be interesting to see if these handy features become standard on mid-range and budget boards. Also, there’s talk of a unified ejection system from PCI-SIG, which could make it even smoother for everyone to change out parts.
