The team behind Flipper Zero has recently shared the culmination of their work over the past three years in the Firmware 1.0 update. The update is divided into four major categories: third-party apps, NFC updates, Java Script support, and General System Improvements.
For the Flipper Zero, it used to be that all of its features were part of the system's firmware. To receive any update, the entire system firmware needs to be updated. In Firmware 1.0, that is no longer the case. Firmware 1.0 introduces "dynamic application loading," which allows the Flipper to load FAP files or Flipper Application Files directly from the microSD card. This process is accomplished with the help of the newly introduced app loader. The team also noticed that FAP files for the Flipper Zero were difficult for users to find as they are spread across many sites and forums, so the team created the "Apps Catalog" to aggregate community projects. The team took it one step further and made all of the apps in the catalog open source, to the delight of many users.
Thanks to the addition of a scripting engine in Firmware 1.0, apps written in JavaScript are now possible. With JavaScript being one of the most popular programming languages, the team thought it necessary to offer an easier programming language to make developing for the Flipper Zero more approachable. To run JavaScript on the device, users can transfer their written JS files to the Flipper Zero and Run them from the Apps menu without compiling them beforehand.
To speed up the system's NFC capabilities, one of Flipper Zero's most impressive features, the team completely redesigned the NFC subsystem from scratch. The result is a new system with improved architecture, new NFC card protocols, and over two times faster performance than the previous firmware. Additionally, users no longer have to use external software to edit the content of NFC cards they have dumped onto the Flipper Zero. For select NFC cards, users can modify data sectors, keys, and access bits directly from the Flipper Mobile App.
Finally, users have much to look forward to regarding general system improvements. A few key improvements include a new low-power mode, faster Bluetooth when connected to Android, sub-GHz improvements, and much more.
