HP's Envy laptop line-up has historically provided excellent value, capturing much of the premium build quality and performance of the Spectre series in a much more affordable package. The HP Envy 14 2-in-1 encapsulates that, and a recent Best Buy sale makes the versatile Ryzen-powered convertibles even more attractive.
The HP Envy 14 2-in-1 with the AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS has been discounted by $450 for a final Best Buy price of $599.99, while the Ryzen 5 8640HS-powered variant has come down to $549.99, although Best Buy Plus members (a $49.99 annual membership) get an additional $70 off, bringing the price down to $479.99 for frequent Best Buy shoppers. Of course, this membership deal only makes sense if you frequently shop at Best Buy and can distribute that $49.99 annual cost over a number of purchases throughout the year.
In terms of hardware, the two versions of the HP Envy 14 2-in-1 are virtually identical, aside from the CPU, iGPU, and storage. Both feature 16 GB of DDR5-6400 RAM, identical 1920×1200 IPS touch displays, and a 360-degree hinge that makes the laptop perfect for note-taking duties and even digital art using something like the $44.99 Wacom Bamboo Ink Smart Stylus.
The biggest hardware differences between the Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 versions of the HP Envy 14 2-in-1 come down to CPU and GPU performance and storage — with a mere 512 GB NVMe SSD in the Ryzen 5 version, while the Ryzen 7 laptop gets a 1 TB SSD. While the eight-core AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS and its Radeon 780M iGPU offer basically identical performance to the likes of the Asus ROG Ally (curr. $649.99 at Best Buy), the Ryzen 5 8640HS has a significantly slower Radeon 760M iGPU and two fewer CPU cores.
The HP Envy 14 2-in-1's biggest weak point is its display. While 1920×1200 is adequate for the relatively small 14-inch display, and the display is surprisingly FreeSync compatible, it maxes out at 300 nits brightness and 60 Hz refresh rate. Meanwhile, colour reproduction is also rather mediocre, with the touch display covering just 62.5% of the sRGB colour space.
The HP Envy 14 2-in-1 also foregoes the trend of lacklustre connectivity options, thanks to dual USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports also capable of 10 Gbps output. There's also a separate 3.5 mm audio combo jack and an HDMI 2.1 out pulling display duties.
