The Asus ROG Ally quickly became a favourite among handheld gamers on Windows, largely thanks to its balance of price, excellent performance and features, and manageable size. A new Best Buy deal on the Asus ROG Ally with AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme makes the 7-inch handheld even more attractive, bringing it down to its lowest-ever price of $499.99.

While the Asus ROG Ally has since been updated by the ROG Ally X as a mid-cycle refresh, bringing with it some choice ergonomic, performance, and battery life updates. That said, the original Asus ROG Ally still remains a reasonably priced, high-performance Windows-powered handheld that we liked at its original $699.99 MSRP. The $150-off deal simply sweetens the pot further.

In our review of the Asus ROG Ally, we were impressed by the handheld's display, which reached 513 nits and had 92.1% coverage of the sRGB colour gamut, meaning games will be displayed accurately. The display's 6 ms response times also serve it well for fast-paced gaming — especially at the ~60 FPS that the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme exhibited in our testing.

Of course, frame rates will depend on the game you're playing, with some less demanding games, like Vampire Survivors and Hades, even allowing the ROG Ally to max out its 120 Hz refresh rate. That said, we found that the AMD Radeon 780M iGPU trades blows with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q in most benchmarks and games.
