The likes of RetroHandhelds have discovered the CB408 Smart Pocket Max, another budget retro gaming handheld that is available for less than $100. While the device resembles something like the Retroid Pocket 4 or Anbernic RG552 (curr. $199.99 on Amazon), it lacks the performance that Anbernic's option achieves thanks to its Rockchip RK3399 chipset.
Instead, the CB408 Smart Pocket Max is another Rockchip RK3566-powered affair. As such, it has four ARM Cortex-A55 CPU cores at its disposal clocked at 1.8 GHz, along with a Mali-G52 MP2 GPU for emulating retro games. Additionally, the CB408 Smart Pocket Max is said to contain 2 GB LPDDR4 RAM, plus a 4,000 mAh battery and a 4.95-inch IPS display that outputs at 1,280 x 720 pixels.
Incidentally, RetroHandhelds notes that there is a discrepancy when it comes to touchscreen support. Although the CB408 Smart Pocket Max is advertised as such, its unit arrived with the corresponding ribbon cable unplugged. Supposedly, reconnecting this cable reintroduces touchscreen support in some cases, but your mileage may vary. Added to that, RetroHandhelds reports that its unit did not support Android and Linux dual-booting out of the box.
Currently, the CB408 Smart Pocket Max is orderable from AliExpress for approximately $71 with 64 GB of storage in black, burgundy and sky blue colour options. Alternatively, the gaming handheld can be picked up with double the storage for closer to $77. Please see the corresponding AliExpress store listing for further details.
