Brian Eno, composer of Windows 95 startup sound, releases £20,000 limited-edition Turntable II at Paul Stolper Gallery

Brian Eno has released his £20,000 limited-edition Turntable II at the Paul Stolper Gallery. His acrylic, LED-lit sculpture is a follow-up to his iconic 2021 Turntable I. The Turntable II was on display at the gallery until March 9, 2024, and 150 copies along with 20 artist's proofs are available for purchase.

Eno is an English musician known for his decades of innovative works in ambient music as well as electronic, rock and pop music. In the world of technology, he is best remembered for his composition of the Windows 95 startup sound (listen to all the Windows startup sounds here).

He has been interested in generative music and art since the 1960s and has created software and released albums that contain his works in this field. Eno’s generative works utilize “overlapping unsynchronized cycles…that slowly evolve and never exactly repeat” to create complex music and light performances. The Turntable II displays a ‘colourscape’ based on unsynchronized light cycles so that even “When it doesn’t have to do anything in particular, like play a record, it is a sculpture."

The Turntable II measures 45 cm in diameter by 16.8 cm in height. The acrylic body allows light from internal LEDs to shine through, giving it a warm glow in the dark. The player handles both 33 rpm and 45 rpm records and is belt-driven. Sound is picked up by an Ortofon 2M cartridge (specs) mounted on an 8.6-inch Pro-ject aluminum tonearm.

A total of 170 editions have been created, of which 20 are artist’s proofs. When buying the collectible 2024 Turntable II, don't forget to pick up Brian Eno's latest vinyl on Amazon. All come with an engraved edition number and signature on the side. Readers who don’t have £20,000 on hand can buy a more affordable Pro-ject turntable with his latest vinyl.
