Apple Music extends free trial to 3 months in limited offer for new subscribers

Apple Music is a paid-only service with no free tier, so the free trial is an important way to let potential subscribers experience what they can get out of it. For the last two years, the free trial has been one month long, but as part of a limited offer, Apple has increased it back to three months. The extended trial is only available to first time subscribers so, to be eligible, you need to have never taken a paid or trial subscription before. The offer is open till September 23.

Once the three months are over, the usual $11 per month fee kicks in. Apple Music offers a healthy balance between curated, editor-picked playlists and algorithmic recommendations based on listening history. Moreover, most of the songs are available in the lossless ALAC format, with the default being CD quality (16-bit/44.1kHz). A growing portion of its music library is also being mixed (or remastered) in spatial audio.

Apple Classical, which runs on its own app, is also included with the subscription. iPhone and iPad users can also access Apple Music Sing – essentially a very effective karaoke mode that works with all songs. True to its name, though, Apple Music does not include podcasts and audiobooks. Both those types of content get their own dedicated apps in Apple’s ecosystem.

You can sign up for Apple Music on its website here, or by opening or downloading the app on your Apple or Android device. At the end of the trial period, the standard individual plan costs $11/month, while a family plan gives full access to six people for $17/month. The student plan, meanwhile, is available for $6/month. To get the most out of Apple Music’s lossless audio, you can buy a USB DAC and headphone amp like the FiiO Q3 and the FiiO JadeAudio KA5, and a pair of audiophile-grade headphones, like the Sennheiser HD 620S closed-back headphones or the Sennheiser HD 650 open-back headphones.
