1.8 million Tesla vehicles in the US affected by dangerous hood latch position detection bug

Over 1.8 million Tesla vehicle owners in the United States need to install a software update to fix a critical flaw that could lead to a catastrophic outcome. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) disclosed the information on Tuesday, June 30; the problem appears to be one of a software nature, mostly. As a note on the official Tesla site says, an unlatched hood could potentially open entirely while driving, obstructing the driver's vision and ultimately leading to an accident. The same note claims that no accidents have so far happened that could be linked to this specific issue.

This is the second major issue for Tesla to deal with this year, following a February recall of 2.2 million vehicles due to faulty lights. Last month, the company also had to recall Cybertrucks for the 4th time since opening sales in order to fix the windscreen wiper motor.

The vehicles affected are Tesla’s Model 3, Model S, and Model X vehicles manufactured between 2021 and 2024, as well as the Model Y produced between 2020 and 2024. Owners need to update the software on their vehicles to version 2024.20.3 or later as soon as possible.

Tesla customers can verify if their vehicle is affected by the issue by using the Tesla VIN Recall Search or the NHTSA VIN Recall Lookup tool.
