Elon Musk's newly launched AI image generator "Grok", which was developed by xAI and is available for Premium and Premium users on X (formerly Twitter), is causing controversy. Grok is said to have safeguards in place to prevent the creation of inappropriate content. If this is the case, however, these measures do not appear to work particularly well or be easy to circumvent, because unlike the competition from Midjourney or Dall-E, Grok has sometimes generated content that is not socially acceptable.
Users have already created numerous images that show celebrities in compromising situations, copyrighted characters and violent scenes. As The Verge reports, this has led to concerns about the spread of harmful content - especially in view of the upcoming US elections. The controversy has also reached Reddit.
Elon Musk, who is known for not being a fan of restrictions and seeing them as censorship, has not yet commented on the issue. However, since August 16, Grok now appears to be much more restricted when it comes to creating provocative or harmful images. An official confirmation from Elon Musk or xAI is still pending, but it appears that the entrepreneur has bowed to public pressure.
